Over the past hundred years, humans have formed an unfair civilization. We have changed the face of the Earth for the sake of our own species’ comfort, ignoring ecological sustainability. The problems that have emerged due to the population of our species seem to be unsolvable only with technology or science, but also with social and ethical aspects. There is a new perspective in thinking and behaving in order to provide an opportunity for Earth’s sustainability.
We are thinking again about ecological citizenship, placing all species as citizens who are responsible for the harmony of life on Earth. An example is indigenous people who have ecological ethics in maintaining biodiversity. They understand that if the culture and religion of their ancestors are extinct, the blessings of the forest and the sea will also be destroyed. In fact, the sea has the opportunity to restore the Earth. The blue carbon ecosystem has an extraordinary ability to absorb and store carbon from the atmosphere. Its contribution is very important in mitigating climate change.
In an exhibition entitled “New Perspective on Earth’s Opportunities”, National Geographic Indonesia displays a series of photo and infographic works that have been published on various platforms with yellow frames. The title of this exhibition also serves as the opening theme for the celebration of two decades of National Geographic Indonesia exploring the archipelago, which will peak on 28 March 2025. Humans have changed the ecological sustainability of the Earth. But at least, we still have the only hope: the power of humanity will restore it. Let’s give Earth a chance before this planet becomes uninhabitable.
