Since its first edition, JILF has served as a vibrant meeting ground for languages, cultures, and ideas. The year 2025 marks the festival’s fifth celebration.

In 2024, JILF explored the theme F/Acta: Words and Actions Aligned on Eco-Literature, rooted in awareness of the multidimensional crisis caused by environmental exploitation and the struggle for resources. The theme has reaffirmed literature’s role as a space for reflection, a medium for ideas, and a catalyst for change. Building on that vision, the 2025 theme, Homeland in Our Bodies, broadens the perspective by examining the meaning of humanity and the boundaries of homeland while amplifying marginalized voices.

Over the years, JILF has consistently presented the current issues and thoughts of prominent literary figures. Among them are Adania Shibli, keynote speaker of JILF 2019, and Hiromi Kawakami, keynote speaker of JILF 2024. These writers offered critical perspectives on how literature responds to social issues and collective trauma.

As a bridge between Indonesian literature and the international literary world, JILF brings together writers, translators, scholars, and readers from around the globe to exchange ideas, share experiences, and forge collaborations. These cross-cultural encounters enrich perspectives and create opportunities for translation, dialogue, and joint publications—helping Indonesian literature gain stronger recognition and appreciation on the global stage.

Through JILF, Jakarta reinforces its status as a global city and a UNESCO City of Literature. This recognition is more than symbolic. It reflects a commitment to sustainable collaborations and long-term cultural programs. In this spirit, JILF serves as a cross-cultural network and a platform for nurturing and empowering national literary communities.

Every year, JILF engages literary communities through exhibitions and offers emerging writers a platform to speak about their work. This year is particularly special, as the Literature Committee of the Jakarta Arts Council has invited students from the Sastra Masuk Sekolah (Literature Goes to Schools) program to come and experience the festival’s events. Six of sixteen targeted schools in Jakarta are participating in this initiative.

The Literature Committee remains committed to shaping JILF into a festival that inspires pride, reflection, and cultural exchange. We hope JILF continues to grow and strengthen its position among the world’s literary festivals. Through these efforts, Jakarta reaffirms its role as a global cultural hub, while JILF continues to be a space where Indonesian literature resonates worldwide.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row]

[vc_row row_height_percent=”0″ override_padding=”yes” h_padding=”2″ top_padding=”3″ bottom_padding=”3″ overlay_alpha=”50″ gutter_size=”3″ column_width_percent=”100″ shift_y=”0″ z_index=”0″ content_parallax=”0″ uncode_shortcode_id=”645191″][vc_column column_width_percent=”100″ align_horizontal=”align_center” gutter_size=”3″ overlay_alpha=”50″ shift_x=”0″ shift_y=”0″ shift_y_down=”0″ […]

["post-3048","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry
["GET
